A+B=C and A+G=C, and Sometimes, A+B=Y, A+G=Z, but Y≠C and Z≠C!

Yeah, it took me a while to get this ship off the ground and into orbit yesterday.  Started out with a good three hours of writing time ahead of me, but, despite following one of my regular “flow formulas”, I couldn’t enter the zone, it just wasn’t working.  It wasn’t a particularly challenging section that I was revising, but it still wasn’t coming together.  Frustration…  So, I stopped and watched some old music videos online, surfed a bit, and tried not to grumble too much and when I went at it again, still couldn’t get the engines of creativity to fire…  One hour fully wasted.

Then I went back to the computer and played a card game…thirty more minutes evaporated before my eyes.  Frustration…growing…

I decided, after that game, that if I didn’t get it going in thirty minutes, I’d shut it all down and do some housework.  I gave it one last look and finally, thankfully, with just over an hour of writing time left, I took off, and finished the session nicely and as always, wanting more.

That doesn’t usually happen, me not be able to get into the zone, but then suddenly entering it.  If I’m sort of in the zone, I can make it through the writing session satisfactorily, but if I’m way out like today, the session usually ends quickly and badly.  So this is somewhat new…

Today was much better and I enjoyed much more time at the keyboard and stayed in the moment.  I still wasn’t fully 100% in the zone, but I was in a better position than yesterday, that’s for sure.  And I hit a milestone in the revision process in that I have reached a major turning point in the story.  Now it’s really gonna take off.  I’m behind in my plan, but still moving forward.

I know every writer, artist, musician, professional, etc has their own rituals that they perform in order to get into the zone.  This intrigues me on many levels.  Some of the things I do prior to writing totally clue me in on my zone-state or lack thereof, but I haven’t yet devised a method to adjust things if I find I’m borderline or totally out.  So, I’m still playing around with my flow formulas and while I can’t always be in the zone, yet, I know that I can, some or maybe now most of the time, push through and still make the best of it.

About malcolm2030

I started my formal study of a traditional Japanese martial art during my freshman year in college in late 1990 and in early 2017, I took a leap of faith and have been teaching traditional martial arts and fitness on a full-time basis. I enjoy researching and exploring topics ranging from health and fitness, brain science and quantum physics, to relational dynamics, energy, and optimum living. I believe that we all should be daily evolving toward our true potential; while there will be times when we fall back, or get pushed back, or knocked down, the sum of our steps over a given period of time should be forward.
